Upcoming Book Displays with IBPA

Patient Handbook to Medical Care: Your Personal Health Guide will be on display with the IBPA (Independent Book Publishers Association) in the IBPA Cooperative booth for Book Expo America 2009 (BEA 2009), and the Americal Library Association (ALA) annual convention,

BEA 2009 takes place May 29-31, 2009 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York, NY.

The ALA annual convention takes place July 11-14, 2009 in Chicago, IL.

This is the third consecutive year that Patient Handbook to Medical Care has been on display at BEA and the ALA annual conventions. This is the only self help health book written by a doctor that tells readers what doctor visits, exams, tests, and health coverage really mean in everday language.

Dr. Richardson, a family medicine physician, offers an overview of health care from an insider's perspective.  This 112-page reader-friendly book covers topics such as complete physical exams, medical tests, medical specialists, preventive screening guidelines, and health coverage.

As Dr. Richardson eloquently puts it, "In our society we are accustomed to taking a doctor's word on the state of our medical condition and treatment whether or not we understand it and either without asking any questions or without getting adequate answers to the questions we might pose.  Today that may not be a healthy situation...By reading this book, you will find out how to take charge of your most important asset - you". She further states, "Prevention, wellness, health maintenance, and early detection are important in our disease oriented society where doctors are taught to take care of you after you are sick".

14TH ANNUAL WRITER'S DIGEST INTERNATIONAL SELF-PUBLISHED BOOK AWARDS

HONORABLE MENTION

REFERENCE BOOKS CATEGORY

Featured in the April 2007 issue of Writers Digest.

Thanks to Writers Digest for this honor!  The judge's commentary:

Written by a reliable source, this book is the perfect quick reference for all of those squeamish people who hate going to the doctor.  I am one of those people. I hate wondering why a certain test was performed, exactly what a common diagnosis may mean, what the proper specialist for my malady might be called, and negotiating the maze of health insurance forms and other paperwork that seems to accompany my ailment; thereby adding insult to injury.  To avoid the mystery, misery, and tedium of the wellness process, I often remain sick in order to forego or delay much needed medical appointments.  The author writes for people like me; she writes in a calming, professional tone and explains, in as simple and non-threatening a manner as possible, what I can expect along every step of the healing process.  By learning to keep a medical diary, knowing what to expect of my medical staff as well as how to decode their complicated language, and then by understanding the basics of the complex American healthcare system, I can take charge of my own healthcare.  This little book provides me with all the tools necessary to do just that.

MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

"Patient Handbook To Medical Care: Your Personal Health Guide" by J. L. Richardson (a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who has completed her residency training at Georgetown University) is a helpful, practical, "reader friendly" guide to a comprehensive understanding of what it is like to be a medical patient and how to get what you need to make competent medical decisions. Teaching readers on how to keep medical records and a medical diary as well as their importance in making good medical decisions, what to expect from a doctor visit to ensure valid and appropriate medical attention, information about medical tests and specialists, and even what to look for and/or require in a managed healthcare plan, "Patient Handbook To Medical Care" acts for properly aiding in becoming an informed patient. "Patient Handbook To Medical Care" is very highly recommended to everyone searching for an accessible, jargon free format with which to analyze their own health records and retain a positive doctor-patient relationship.

THE MINDQUEST REVIEW

During this time of increasing depersonalization of health care and new medical advances, it is imperative we understand how to take charge of our own healthcare. Dr. Richardson provides vital, insider information about dealing with the healthcare system. The book is an understandable, valuable guide to help you become a proactive and informed patient.

Noteworthy: Finally, a medical doctor is revealing the good and the bad about the healthcare maze. What you really need to know about a doctors visit, medical tests, specialists, a healthcare plan, and record keeping is completely covered. A must read for anyone caring about their health and wanting to comprehend the system.
